Getting to Dubai isn’t cheap but travelling to a different continent far away from our own, rarely ever is. The best deals you’ll find from Dublin are with Swiss Airlines (€435 approx) and BMI (€510) who operate direct services three times a week.
Accomodation
Dubai isn’t your typical backpacker’s destination, you know the ones-flooded with dimly lit bars on cobbled streets, seedy hostels, and hot dog stands at 4 in the morning. In fact, there are no hostels in Dubai, instead it is more ‘budget hotels’ and you will struggle to find any better value than the Pacific Hotel. Its conveniently located near the central bus stops and a short walk from the creek and at €32 for a three bed private en suite, it’s hard to find better value.
If all the opulence of Dubai gets too much, head across the Creek to the old town, where haggling over prices at the gold and spice markets is the order of the day. The Kurama district is also a must-see for fashion- and budget-conscious ladies.
The Dubai in the glossy tourist brochures is a relatively new invention but a city has existed here for hundreds of years, while other desert people have lived in the region for millennia. A fantastic exploration of Middle Eastern history and culture, as well as the birth of Dubai as we know it, can be found in the innovative Dubai Museum.
I almost felt like I’d visited Dubai too soon and at too young an age to truly appreciate it. It’s already an exciting destination and a city of fascinating contrasts — old versus new, ambition versus careful planning, progress versus history. But there’s a pervading sense that in five or 10 years, when cranes no longer dominate the skyline and it’s possible to see and touch all these fledgling developments, Dubai will be truly breathtaking.
The best time of the year to visit Dubai is between November and April, when the weather is coolest. The rest of the year you're more likely to be running from one air-conditioned environment to the next instead of getting out and exploring.
