The Dice man

by Sarah Conway

The Dice Man is a semi-comedic novel published in 1971 by George Cockcroft under the pen name Luke Rhinehart. It tells the story of an American psychiatrist who becomes obsessed with living his life by the luck of the dice.

This dark comedy is both violent and hilarious at the same time. George Cockcroft pulls you in and takes you deeper and deeper into the insanity of a psychiatrist dappling in chapters of murder, rape, adultery and extreme anti social behaviour.

At the centre of the novel is Dr Rhinehart, who becomes bored and disillusioned with his typical American dream lifestyle with a good income, desirable home, pretty wife and two kids. As the faith of the dice takes control over the novel, heightened by the static and rather disjointed style of narration, The Dice Man soon plays its hand with the police, government and corporate American machines.

This book was republished a number of times and acquired the sub-header “Few novels can change your life. This one will". So…just read the damn thing.
