THE Local Elections may be a little over four months away but already there are thirty candidates who have declared their hands in Galway City.
Largely, the main parties have selected who will stand – though others may be added, and, in one case, an opinion poll has been held to try to unscramble precisely who should stand.
This is in the case Fianna Fáil who will have outgoing Councillor John Connolly on their ticket in the Galway City Central are, but who have yet to decide if he will be joined by Ollie Crowe, the brother of sitting Councillor Mike Crowe, or former Mayor Martin Quinn.
More candidates are expected to join the race for a place on the fifteen-seat council in the upcoming months.
Councillor Daniel Callahan, formerly of Sinn Féin, has indicated that he may stand in the Galway City West as an Independent.
The following are among the candidates who have declared so far:
Galway City Central (four seats):
Fine Gael: Mayor Padraig Conneely.
Fianna Fáil: Concillor John Connolly. One further candidate remains to be selected – either Ollie Crowe, or Martin Quinn.
Labour: Councillor Billy Cameron and Councillor Colette Connolly.
Sinn Féin: Anna Marley.
Green Party: Mairéad Ní Chroiní.
Independents: Mike Geraghty.
Galway City West (five seats):
Fine Gael: Councillor John Mulholland, and Hildegarde Naughton.
Fianna Fáil: Peter Keane.
Labour: Neil McNeilis.
Sinn Féin: Tom Hanly
Green Party: Councillor Niall Ó Brolcháin.
Independents: Councillor Donal Lyons (former PD), and Councillor Catherine Connoly (former Labour).
Galway City East (six seats):

Fianna Fáil: Councillor Michael Crowe, Councillor Mary Leahy, and Sheila Mangan.
Labour: Councillor Tom Costello, Derek Nolan, and Nuala Nolan.
Sinn Féin: Martin Concannon.
