Jack who at this point was only entering his adulthood says “I think the script was fine, the problems lay mainly in the production side of things, but you know we were only a young company at the time and I’ve learned a lot from those mistakes.”
The Company Production is a production company in its “infancy” set up ran by Jack. The thought process behind this “is to produce people’s shows… there are guys within the company (including Jack himself) who write scripts and we produce those shows, then there are also people who give us a call and say” Jack continues in his best Hollywood impression “Hey I got this script, I’ve got some money attached, I have a director would you guys mind running the production side”.
This is a niche market which has expanded well beyond Jack’s expectations.
After completing his Leaving Certificate in the Sligo Grammar school, Jack had the option of studying history in NUI, Galway or film making in GMIT, “so I had to make the decision to go down a technical film making road or to study history and do the rest in my spare time.” He says with a smile, “I’m happy with my decision”.
Jack, who has produced eight plays since 2007 says the plan for the near future is to get a “proper rehearsal space and a studio to put on performances”.
He claims that the most vital aspect in generating a high-quality show is to get a good producer. “It’s important that the director focuses on actors and the artistic direction. If you have a good producer he or she will run everything else. They’ll run your techies, the building of things, your set, your promotions, and your money. A producer is the backbone of a production.”
But above all else to survive in show business, you need to have determination and motivation. This is something that oozes from Jack’s relaxed but authoritative decorum. Before exited the building in a style Elvis would have been proud of, he sums up the entertainment industry. “Most importantly you have to keep working, that’s this business, you have to keep working, if you don’t work, you don’t get anywhere.”
