Avoid eating at restaurants close to tourist attractions as these tend to double their prices. You should expect to pay no more than €30 for a two course meal for two with a bottle of wine in a normal restaurant.
As well as the typical Italian foods of pasta and pizza, you should try some fish dishes and the Italian rice specialties of risotto and suppli. Wash it all down with a bottle of Italy’s best Frascati and some home made ice-cream.
To go or not to go?
Rome is best visited in early summer or autumn. During the months of July and August, the weather can be unbearably hot and most Roman’s take the month of August off so a lot of businesses are closed. Whenever you go, however, be sure to take a camera as Rome is a magical city with so much you will want to remember.
The cheapest way to get around Rome is by using the foolproof metro system. There are only two lines which interlink at the central Termini station. Each journey costs a flat rate of €1 although day tickets cost €4 and can be used as often as required.
Alternatively, you can take the bus. Buses are incredibly frequent and cost roughly the same as the metro. Beware though, they get very hot during the summer and are NOT air-conditioned.
The best way to get around Rome, however, is using the gifts God gave you; your feet. Everything within Rome is within walking distance and by walking, you find the greatest little restaurants Rome has to offer.
