Accommodation is easily found in Rome. Hostel prices for Rome city centre range from €10 to €30 a night per person but hotel prices can be as little as €50 a night for a 2 star double room. So if you are not travelling alone, it may be cheaper to book a hotel.
Where is good?
Hotels in the area of Termini station, Rome’s central train station are plentiful but can be expensive as they prey on tourists arriving from the station. Good areas to look for are near the Piazza Navona, one of Rome’s older districts which is almost equilateral to some of Rome’s finest monuments. But more of those later…
Another place which is suitable for people on a tighter budget is Northern Rome. There are lots of student friendly hostels and holiday villages.
Activities
Rome is rich in activities so you should never be stuck for something to do. There are the obvious attractions of the Colosseum, the Vatican, the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon. But did you know Rome is only twenty minutes away from the beach by train? The beaches are a two minute walk from the Ostia train station and you can get a return train ticket for as little as €4.
Most of Rome’s best activities are free, however. The finest architecture Rome has to offer is on display in the Piazza’s. Bernini’s sculptures famously adorn the Piazza Navona. The Trevi fountain costs nothing and Capitol Hill, birthplace of the Roman Empire, is free to enter as well.
In these “difficult economic times” – yawn – escapism is becoming increasingly attractive. While some may take that to mean evenings crying in front of the telly, here at MAJIC.ie we prefer a more literal take on the term “escape”.
Continuing our recession busting series, NIAMH WALSH tells you how to get to Rome without breaking what’s left of the bank.
Getting there
The cheapest way to get to Rome is, of course, on a Ryanair flight. Flights with Ryanair are generally about half the price of any other carrier. The surprise advantage is that the Ryanair airport, Ciampino, is closer to Rome than the national airport, Da Vinci. It is about half an hour drive from the city and is easily accessible by bus. Flight prices from Dublin range from €100 off season, with Ryanair, to €250 during the summer months.
